Leonard Johnnie James ‘Len’ Greene, 87, died peacefully surrounded by his family on March 14, 2024, at Pointe Coupee General Hospital, after a brave and lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Leonard’s birth certificate claims he was born on April 19, 1936, but that was when the doctor arrived in the small community of Goodwill in West Carroll parish. His actual birthday and the one he and his mother celebrated occurred on April 18, 1936. Leonard left Goodwill in 1954 to attend LSU in Baton Rouge, studying pre-medicine. His studies were interrupted as he proudly served his country with the 1st Cavalry Division of the Army as a medical technician during the Korean Conflict at the DMZ. Upon his return, he completed his degree at Northeast Louisiana State College in Monroe. After graduation, he moved to northern California where he earned a Master’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of San Francisco. Post-graduation, Leonard took a job at Atlas Chemicals in Tennessee, then Ciba-Geigy in St. Gabriel, LA, but his entrepreneurial drive guided him to become a licensed contractor, successful real estate developer, and landlord. He built apartments and houses in Baton Rouge and False River and developed the Jarreau subdivision of Island Woods. Possessing a deep respect for his chosen career, Len gave back to his profession and community as President of the Baton Rouge Apartment Association and President of the New Roads Rotary Club. It was not all work though. An avid RV’er, he served as President of the Baton Rouge and Region 6 Airstream Travel Club. Both a gentleman and a scholar, this soft-spoken, rather handsome man stayed true and grounded to his country roots. Books about World War II, Louisiana history and politics, as well as a myriad of biographies filled his bookshelves. He could and would converse with anyone, anytime, about anything. The keeper of family lore and genealogy, Leonard was everyone’s favorite mealtime companion. He never missed an opportunity to engage with relatives whether at a large family gathering or funeral. Embracing his wanderlust spirit, he roamed the U.S. of A., seeing all of the lower 48 States and traversed much of Mexico and Canada in his beloved Airstream. In 2017, the VA arranged a trip for him to South Korea to honor Leonard’s exemplary military service. Nothing brought Len greater happiness than spending time with his family, who will miss him deeply. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra Fairchild, and adoring daughters Lenda G. Wall (Tom), and Sandra G. Whitehead (Steven), grandchildren, Misty T. Smith, George L.G. Broussard, Olivia D. Whitehead, Darryl M. Whitehead, and Rhett A. Whitehead, and greatgrandchildren, J.T., Lettie and Edith Kendal; his stepchildren, Tommy Greene (Denise), Terri Boyd (Bonnie), Bruce Warren (Sandi), Wrenn Estilette, Kim Guerin, and J. Bob Guerin (Rachel), his 11 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great grandchildren; his siblings, V. Glen Green (Mary), M. LaCrese Green, Martha N. Bryan (Sydney), and Tim J. Green (Gwen) and sisters-in-law Sue Green, and Penny Fairchild (Jerry Arp). He is also survived by his lifelong friends who also happen to be his cousins, B.W. Tyson (Margie) and Donald McIntyre (Annette), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Travis T. and Ethel Tyson Green, his brothers, Cleabourne Green, and Thomas A. Green, father and mother-in law Brogan and Kathleen Fairchild, brother and sister-in-law Buddy and Jyl Adams, step-granddaughter Payton Guerin, lifelong friend/ cousin, Gaston Tyson (Yvonne), and his best canine companion, Gadget. The family would like to thank the ER nurses and Dr. Punukollu at Pointe Coupee General for their care and compassion, and a special thanks to the staff and Dr.’s with the VA, especially Dr. Toan Hau for his dedicated care. Services will be held at St. Paul’s Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 605 E. Main St., New Roads, LA 70760 on April 18, 2024 with Mother Peggy Scott officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am, memorial service with mass at 11:00 am, and reception to follow in the church parish house. Private interment will take place at a later date in Louisiana National Cemetery, Zachary, LA. If you wish to make a donation in his memory, please consider Parkinsons. org, Pointe Coupee Animal Shelter, or the charity of your choice.
