August P. Hurst was born on September 1st, 1923, to the late Rosa Bondy Hurst and Willie Hurst. He was raised on False River and in New Roads, Louisiana with his parents and 10 siblings. He served two tours overseas in the Army during WWII. He returned home and met and married the late Delores Batiste Hurst. From that union, 12 children were born. He provided for his large family by working at several industrial plants, agricultural work, and finished his long working career by retiring from Holsum Bakery in Baton Rouge. Mr. Hurst can be described as a very meek, humble man who is dedicated to his family, church, and faith. He is well loved and respected by the people in the neighborhood in which he lived for over 70 years. He is a lifetime member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 560 in New Roads. His already large family has expanded with 36 grandchildren, 86 great grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren. His hobbies include reading, gardening, and watching western TV shows. He also enjoys spending time with his brother Jules Hurst. Mr. Hurst celebrated his 100th birthday with a Catholic Mass and a large banquet surrounded by family and friends. He received numerous awards for his military service, his dedication to reading and gardening as well as a Letter of Proclamation from Pointe Coupee Parish awarding his 100th birthday as August Hurst Day in the Parish. He is survived by 1O children; Wanda Hurst Maloid, Marie E. Hurst, Karen K. Hurst, Connie C. Hurst, Mona M. Hurst Gibson (Michael Gibson), Sonjia R. Hurst, Anthony D. Hurst (Bernice Hurst), Mary D. Hurst, Matthew W. Hurst, Bill R. Hurst (Monica Bellazin); one brother Mr. Jules Hurst, one daughter-in-law Phyllis Hurst, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, greatgreat grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Delores Batiste Hurst, his two sons Joseph A. Hurst and Robert R. Hurst: his parents Rosa Bondy Hurst and Willie Hurst and 8 of his siblings. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; Rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m. and funeral mass at 11:00 a.m.
