A ceremony Saturday night in Oscar marked the dedication the newest addition to Fire District No. 3 and honored a Ventress native who died two years ago this weekend.
George LaCour has spent most of his life in farming, and he attributes much of his success to co-op groups that helped him expand and improve his business. The Morganza farmer was named 2022 Co-Op Leader of the Year.
MORGANZA — As Louisiana’s sugarcane acreage expands, farmers and scientists are learning more about how the crop performs outside of its traditional growing area. They’re interested in finding varieties that do well under the environmental conditions of the sugarcane belt’s northern and western fringes, where winters are colder and freeze damage to the tropical plant is a concern.
The first state holiday for Juneteenth also will mark the inaugural celebration sponsored by the City of New Roads. The festivities will be held from 2 p.m.

The LSU AgCenter will sponsor a chef camp June 27-28 open to 9- to 12-year-olds for an immersive experience. The young chefs will learn about the culinary traditions of In-dia, Japan and China and will get to make classic dishes, homemade cheese, sushi and fortune cookies, according to LSU Ag-Center nutrition agent Breanna Staab.
The City of New Roads has received a Distance Learning Telemedicine (DLT) grant as part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant awarded to the Southern University Law Center, Mayor Cornell Dukes said.
