Discussion and/or Action Regarding a Job Description & Salary Schedule for an Athletic Trainer- Mr. Langlois stated at the Board’s directive, a job description and salary schedule were created for an athletic trainer that would be employed by the School Board; information was placed on BoardDocs. He mentioned the job description was created to meet our school district’s needs, and the salary schedule is based on our current nurse’s salary schedule adjusted for a 202-day calendar.
Board member Chad Aguillard questioned if the salary offered would attract a good applicant. Superintendent Canezaro responded to Mr. Aguillard’s concern stating the geographic location may be more of a factor than the salary being offered to get people to drive to Pointe Coupee. Ms. Canezaro stated according to the job description qualifications, an applicant must have a master’s degree, which is necessary to receive this type of degree from a university. Superintendent Canezaro explained following Board approval of the job description and salary schedule; we will advertise. She mentioned the employee would be on a 7 to 7½ day schedule; however, their daily schedule will be altered so they can be present for the practices and games. She mentioned the athletic trainer in another parish reports to work at 2:00 p.m. Ms. Canezaro announced since they will not teach any classes, they will not be needed during morning hours, thus, the athletic trainer’s work schedule will be altered to meet our school district’s need. Mr. Chad Aguillard emphasized that a good person is needed for this position. Ms. Canezaro expressed the challenge of having an employee from Baton Rouge, etc., drive through multiple school districts to get to Pointe Coupee. Mr. Chad Aguillard inquired when do we expect this person to be engaged with the children after everything goes through?
Superintendent Canezaro stated if the Board approves the job description/salary schedule and permission to advertise tonight, we will advertise during the month of January, set up interviews with any applicants and can have someone ready by the end of this school year. She explained that she can interview any applicants but if they do not meet the expectations we need, then we do not have to hire them; it is just an application/interview process. The timeline will be up to the directive of the Board. Ms. Canezaro stated that they are not mandated to advertise for any length of time; therefore, if the Board approves tonight, they can run the advertisement for two weeks and bring back to the Board in January.
Board Member Frank Aguillard stated someone good needs to be hired as soon as possible because sports in high school are different than it used to be years ago with year-round practices, Mr. Aguillard announced that School Board members cannot hire; however, they can recruit. He mentioned that he knows the information is on BoardDocs; but requested that the job description/salary schedule be emailed to him to send to someone. He also mentioned that surrounding parish coaches may know of someone interested in the athletic trainer position in Pointe Coupee. Mr. Frank Aguillard recommended sending the advertisement to local school districts and Superintendent Canezaro stated that Mrs. Natalie Aguillard and Athletic Director Kahlil Thomas has access to the LHSAA network.
Superintendent Canezaro stated if there are no applicants for the athletic trainer position, and the feedback she is receiving is the salary schedule is too low, then she can come back to the Board to adjust the salary schedule.
Mr. Thomas Nelson made a motion to move forward with the advertisement for an Athletic Trainer. Mr. Chad Aguillard seconded the motion. Hearing no opposition, the motion carried by a unanimous vote of the eight members of the Board present and voting.
Board Member Jason Lemoine inquired if the position is for 10-months, and he was told it is, and the employee’s salary will be pro-rated.
