Agnes Battley Cobb was born on December 5, 1923, in Dupont, Louisiana to Hermogene and Elesia Battley. On October 11, 2022, she earned her heavenly wings and was called to heaven by Our Lord and her parents, and was the last of her siblings. Agnes was affectionately called Mama by her children. She was a strong, wonderful and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and daughter. She met Duncan while he was serving in the United States Navy and they were united in marriage for 54 years until his death. To this union five children were born, Nancy Ann (Phillip) St. Cyr, Elsie Maxine (Michael) Wright, Duncan Cobb, Jr., Mary Agatha (Floyd) Marshall, and John Glenn (LyKeisha) Cobb. Agnes and her wonderful neighbor, Mrs. Euguinea Smith, raised their children together, and when Mrs. Smith journeyed to heaven, Agnes became the surrogate mother to her children and they loved her dearly, adopting her as their mother and their children’s grandmother. Agnes’ surrogate children include: Laverne (Charles) Aguillard, the Late Thomas J. (Carolyn) Smith, Agnes (Donald) Andrews, Belinda (Barry) Thompson, Valeria (Eric) Rogers, and Monica (Darryl) Celestine. She leaves to cherish her memories, her five children, surrogate Smith children, Grandchildren, Desmond Cobb, Sr., Christopher Wright, Brandon Wright, Major Randall (Sierra) Zeno, Shawn Zeno, Tyler Cobb, Dilnell Johnson, Coco (Gerald) Coleman, Jillian Cobb, John Cobb, II, Thatcher Cobb, Chloe Cobb, great-grandchildren, Kashondalyn, Katelyn, Desmond, Jr., Paris, London, Kendal, Paisley and a host of Smith’s Surrogate grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memories, two sisters-in-law, Rev. Marjorie Cobb Thomas, Rosemary Guerin Cobb, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.Agnes is preceded in death by her husband Duncan Charles Cobb, Sr.; parents, Hermogene and Elesia Battley, and sisters, Francis Samuel, Celina Thomas, Julienne Christopher, Mary Lee Westley and brothers, Dorsey Battley, Joseph Battley, and Norman Battley, Sr., a special brother-in-law, Samuel Wesley and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law. She is also preceded in death by her dear friend, Euguinea P. Smith, her son Thomas J. Smith, Jr. and her grand-daughter, Toni L. Smith. She will be buried with her husband at Port Hudson Cemetery. Her viewing was held on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. at Verrette’s Pointe Coupee Funeral home. Celebration of Life and Legacy was held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Rosary at 10:00 a.m., burial at Port Hudson National Cemetery.
